History of Nakagata Lab
Laboratory Milestones
1998: Prof. Naomi Nakagata was named a Professor at Center for Animal Resources and Development (CARD) in
Kumamoto University.
The Mouse Embryo and Sperm Bank Service was established, directed by Prof. Nakagata.
1999: A research collaboration and technical cooperation was started with the Jackson Laboratory (USA).
A research collaboration and technical cooperation was started with the Medical Research Council (MRC) Harwell
(UK).
The CARD joined the project of the International Mouse Strain Resources (IMSR) to establish a research
infrastructure for sharing genetically engineered mice.
2000: New building of the CARD was established.
Mouse sperm cryopreservation was established (Nakagata Method, Mammal Genome).
A research collaboration was started with the laboratory of Prof. Yanagimachi in the University of Hawai (USA).
First course of mouse reproductive technology was opened at the CARD.
2002: The course of mouse reproductive technology was held in the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center (SLAC) in
Chinese Academy of Science in Shanghai (China).
2004: A research collaboration was started with the the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center (SLAC) in the Chinese
Academy of Science in Shanghai (China).
2005: Advanced service of mouse reproductive technology was established, directed by Prof. Nakagata.
2008: Discovery of methyl-beta-cyclodextrin improves fertilizing ability of cryoprserved sperm in vitro (Biol Reprod).
A research collaboration was started with the Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (Korea).
2009: Development of transport of cold-stored mouse embryos (Cryobiology).
2010: Dr. Toru Takeo was appointed as an Assistant Professor of the Nakagata Lab.
A research collaboration was started with the Taiwan National Laboratory Animal Center (Taiwan).
Dr. Takeo was invited to the EMMA meeting in Rome.
2011: Discovery of reduced glutathione enhances fertilizing ability of oocytes in vitro (Biol Reprod).
A research collaboration was started with the Mary Lyon Centre at the MRC Harwell (UK).
CARD-BRC Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held at the Biological Resource Centre at A*STAR in Singapore.
2012: Development of transport of cold-stored mouse epididymis (Cryobiology).
A research collaboration was started with the laboratory of Dr. Lluis Montoliu in the CNB-CSIC (Spain).
A research collaboration was started with the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (Korea).
A research collaboration was started with the National Institute of Food and Drug Control (China).
Prof. Nakagata and Dr. Takeo were invited to the EMMA Cryopreservation workshop in Madrid.
The CARD-NLAC Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held at the National Laboratory Animal Center at Taipei.
2013: Development of IVF system using vitrified mouse oocytes (Cryobiology).
The CARD-NIFDC Mouse Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation Course was held at NIFDC (Dr. Fan Changfa)
in Beijing (China).
The CARD-CNB Mouse Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation Course was held at the CNB-CSIC (Dr. Lluis Montoliu)
in Madrid (Spain).
2014: The CARD-RPCI Mouse Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation Course was held at the Roswel Park Cancer Institute
(Dr. Aimee Stablewski: RPCI and Dr. Jan Parker: MD Anderson Cancer Institute) in Buffalo NY (USA).
Prof. Nakagata and Dr. Takeo were invited to the INFRAFRONTIER meeting in Munich.
2015: Discovery of ultra-superovulation using inhibin antiserum and equine chorionic gonadotropin (PLoS One ).
The CARD-KRIBB Mouse Sperm and Embryo Cryopreservation Course was held at the Korean Research Institute of
Bioscience and Biotechnology (Dr. Hyoung-Chin Kim) in Chungbuk (Korea).
2016: The Mouse Cryopreservation workshop in Institute of Molecular Genetics ASCR (Prague, Czech Republic).
A terrible disaster of Kumamoto Arthquake hit CARD.
Dr. Takeo was invited to the IPAD-MD meeting in Munich.
The CARD-IP Mouse Embryo and Sperm Cryopreservation Workshop was held at the Institut Pasteur
(Dr. Jean Jaubert) in Paris (France).
A research collaboration was started with the Institut Pasteur (France).
2017: Prof. Naomi Nakagata was appointed to a board member of Asian Mouse Mutagenesis & Resource Association (AMMRA).
The CARD-TEXAS Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held at the Texas A&M Institute of Genomic Medicine (TIGM) in Texas (USA)
2018: The CARD-JAX Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held at Jackson Laboratory (Dr. Robert Taft),
Bar Harbor, Maine (USA)
Prof. Naomi Nakagata was awarded Ando and Tajima Award in the Japanese Association for Laboratory Animal Science (JALAS).
2019: A research collaboration was started with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).
2020: A milestone paper of rat sperm cryopreservation was published in Scientific Reports
Prof. Nakagata retired at Division of Reproductive Engineering.
Prof. Nakagata launched a new laboratory (Division of Reproductive Biotechnology and Innovation) in CARD.
Dr. Takeo was named a Professor of Division of Reproductive Engineering in CARD.
