A great team of Korea Mouse Phenotyping Centers (KMPC) visited our institute on Feb 27, 2018. The KMPC aims to establish a robust research infrastructure of mouse resources and phenotyping analysis to identify gene functions for overcoming human diseases and to acquire useful technologies for the development of new drugs. At our institute, Professor Je Kyung Seong (Director of KMPC, Seoul National University) delivered a lecture about the overview of KMPC and the latest discovery of his research (Functional validation of Adipogeneis-related genes in Large scale mouse models) in the 217 CARD seminar. In the seminar, Professor Jin Wook Bok (Yonsei University College of Medicine) provided a talk about Hearing loss genome from patients and mouse models. In addition, Dr. Toru Takeo (CARD, Kumamoto University) introduced the recent activity of CARD, and our staff and student (Dr. Yoshiko Nakagawa and Ayumi Mukunoki) shared information of the latest technology about genome editing and ultrasuperovultion techniques. It was a fruitful opportunity to develop international collaborations for establishing the leading-research infrastructure in Asia.
CARD Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held at CARD, Kumamoto University on January 15, 2018. The workshop was a part of the Sakura Exchange Program in Sciences which is the program for enhancing exchanges between Asia and Japan of the youths who will play a crucial role in the future field of science and technology through the close collaboration of industry-academia-government by facilitating short-term visits of competent Asian youths to Japan. In this project, students from University of the Philippines Los Baños, is the Philippine's National University, an acknowledged graduate, research and public service educational institution in the country and in the region, attended our workshop to lean basic theory and technique of mouse reproductive technology. Professor Naomi Nakagata and Dr. Toru Takeo organized the 1-day workshop and our students: Satohiro Nakao, Kana Tamura, Koharu Kirikihira, Chihiro Sugahara, Takumi Inoue, Kotono Ito and Mei Yamada participated in the workshop as instructor. It was a very fruitful workshop to share the knowledge and experience of the latest techniques of mouse reproductive technology and have a good communication with young and talented Philippine and Japanese students.
The 35th Meeting of the Society of Animal Reproductive Biotechnology (SARB) was held on December 2nd at Life Science & Environment Research Center in Kawasaki, Japan. In the SARB meeting, we had 25 presentations about the latest reproductive technology in mouse, rat, wild mouse, hamster, suncus, rabbit, marmoset, Japanese macaque and human. Our graduate students, Hidetaka Yoshimoto and Ayumi Mukunoki, presented the improved techniques about cold-storage of mouse sperm and vitrification of mouse oocytes.
The 3rd Oceania Mouse Transgenic & Assisted Reproductive Technologies (TART) Symposium was held at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in Sydney, Australia on November 23-24. Dr. Fabien Delerue (UNSW) was organized the successful meeting. It was a great opportunity to hear interesting presentations of genome editing, gene transferring technology, reproductive technology, mouse embryology, lab and facility management. Dr. Toru Takeo gave two presentations about CARD mouse bank and the latest technology about cold transportation of mouse embryos and sperm in the meeting. The symposium is really helpful to share valuable experience and knowledge among experts and leaders.
The CARD-TEXAS Mouse Reproductive Technology Workshop was held on November 14th-18th 2017 at the Texas A&M Institute for Genomic Medicine (TIGM) (College Station, Texas, USA). The workshop was organized by Prof. Naomi Nakagata and Dr. Toru Takeo of the Center for Animal Resources and Development (CARD) at Kumamoto University, Dr. Andrei Golovko and Dr. Benjamin Morpurgo (Director) of TIGM, Dr. Jan Parker-Thornburg of The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. William Shawlot of The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Jorge Sztein (Visiting Prof. of CARD, Kumamoto University) and Ms. Kristy Williams (CARD workshop instructor, supported three CARD workshops at CNB-CSIC: Madirid, Roswell Park Cancer Institute: Buffalo, and Institute Pasteur: Paris) and our graduate students (Hidetaka Yoshimoto, Ayumi Mukunoki, and Satohiro Nakao) attended the workshop as instructor. Nineteen students and seventeen instructors and lecturers participated in the five-day lecture and hands-on workshop. In the workshop, we shared the latest techniques of mouse reproductive technology based on our experience and knowledge. We would like to thank all participants, instructors, presenters, sponsors, and organizers for their contributions to making a very successful meeting.
Professor Chang-Qing Yang (Vice Director of Department of Clinical Pharmacy, School of Basic Medicine and Clinical Pharmacy in China Pharmaceutical University, Nanjing, China) and his students visited Nakagata Lab on October 25 in 2017. This project is organized by Professor Tetsumi Irie (Department of Clinical Chemistry & Informatics, Faculty of Life Sciences, Kumamoto University, Kumamoto, Japan) a part of Sakura Exchange Program in Science (https://ssp.jst.go.jp/EN/index.html) which aims to enhance student-student interaction between Asia and Japan. In our lab, we explained our research about development of new reproductive technology and fertility medicine and a role of Center for Animal Resources and Development (CARD), Institute of Research, Development and Analysis, Kumamoto University as Mouse Resource Bank. In our lab, Prof. Yang and his students observed fertilized mouse oocytes produced by in vitro fertilization, the demonstration of motility analysis using mouse sperm by computer assisted sperm analyzer (operated by Kotono Ito, Undergraduate Student, School of Pharmacy, Kumamoto University) and facility of mouse bank system. It was fruitful opportunity to share our experience with hopeful and talented students from China Pharmaceutical University.
The Asian Mouse Mutagenesis and Resource Association (AMMRA) and Asian Mouse Phenotyping Consortium (AMPC) meeting was held at NEST Hotel Incheon in Korea on August 26-27 in 2017. At the meeting, the leading institutes for mouse research in Asia shared creative ideas, the newest data and useful knowledge of mouse research. Dr. Toru Takeo presented a lecture about creating a successful platform of mouse research using mouse reproductive technology. Our students of Kana Tamura, Chihiro Sugahara and Koharu Kirikihira showed the latest technology of oocyte cryopreservation and cold-storage of two-cell embryos and sperm at the poster session. Professor Naomi Nakagata was appointed to a board member of the AMMRA.

The 34th Meeting of the Society of Animal Reproductive Biotechnology (SARB) in Kawasaki, Japan12/4/2016 The 34th meeting of the Society of Animal Reproductive Biotechnology (SARB) at the Central Institute for Laboratory Animals in Kawasakaki, Japan. The SARB is mainly organized by alumni graduated from the lab of Prof. Yutaka Toyoda who is a pioneer of in vitro fertilization in mammals. In the meeting, many pioneers of reproductive technology in various species have provided lectures to educate young scientists, technicians and students. Dr. Jorge Sztein gave us a wonderful lecture on the History of Cryopreservation in this meeting. Our student, Kazuki Shirakado talked about the latest data of "Oxidation of protein thiol suppressed sperm capacitation". We thank the happy chance to meet together.
